What is polling for?

You can ask attendees to take polls during your session to gather feedback, vote, or test knowledge. Polls provide you with instant results that you can display to everyone during the meeting, or save for review at a later time.

Does polling work the same on Macs and PCs and the three different conference types?

Polling works across operating systems and conference types, but there are some differences. The below list of questions are meant to give you a general sense of some basic needs you may have with polling in the meetings, events, and trainings conference types on Macs and PCs. Differences between the conference types or platforms are noted.

Can I create my poll questions before class? I don’t have time to make them on the fly during class.

Yes, you can create your poll questions ahead of time, but you must save them to your computer. Poll questions will not automatically save in a scheduled session and appear when you open it later. You can create your polls in any conference type, save them to your computer, and open them up later in any conference type via the File menu, the ellipses button (meetings or events), or the open button in the chat panel.

What kind of questions can I create?

You can create multiple choice (checkboxes), single choice (radio button), or short answer questions.

Can I create more than one poll question?

You can create a poll with one or many questions.

Can I reveal poll questions throughout my class at different times?

Yes, you will have to use the Open button in the poll panel and navigate to each .atp file saved on your computer as you need them. In events and trainings they will open in new tabs in the poll panel. In meetings, only one poll questionnaire (with one item or many) can appear in the poll panel at a time.

Can I reveal sets of poll questions throughout my class at different times?

Yes, you can create a set of questions in a single poll using the “Add a New Question” button as many times as you need. In the scenario described in the question, this would mean you would have to save--and later open--two different .atp files on your computer via the Open button on the poll panel. In events and trainings they will open in new tabs in the poll panel. In meetings, only one poll questionnaire (with one item or many) can appear in the poll panel at a time.

I don’t see a poll panel in my event or training session window. How can I make that appear?

In event and training sessions, you can add the poll panel by selecting View menu → Panels → Manage Panels and highlight Polling in the “Available Panels” list and and click on the >> button to add it to the “Current Panels” list as shown in the below image.

Add the polling panel to Webex meetings and events.

When I share my screen or an application, I can’t find the poll button in the controls that dropdown from the top of the screen.

The polling button could be under either--the “Options” pull-down in trainings or the “More” pull-down in meetings or events--at the right edge of the controls that slide down from the top edge of the screen when screen- or application-sharing. If you don’t see the polling button there, see the above item, “I don’t see a poll panel in my event or training session window.” to add it.

Can I change the order of the buttons on the controls that slide down from the top of the screen?

Yes, in all three conference types. Open the “Manage Panels” window by selecting the View menu → Panels → Manage Panels. Select Polling in the “Current Panels” list, then use the “Move Up” button to move it to at least the fourth item on the list. Only the first four items in the list will appear in the floating dropdown panel that appears at the top edge of your screen when you’re sharing the desktop or an application. This process is the same in a training and event session.

How do I create a poll?

  1. Select a question "Type" from the pulldown menu in the Poll panel. It will default to "Multiple Choice - Single Answer"

  2. Click the "New" button

  3. Type a question in the panel.

  4. Click the Add button to create each option (distractor/answer). Note that if you use the "Short Answer" question type, you will not need to add an answer. A text field will appear below this question type for the user when the poll is live.

  5. Create additional questions, repenting steps 1 to 4 above, changing each question type in step 1 as needed.

How do I edit the text in a poll question or option (distractor/answer)?

  1. Double click the line of text for a question or an option and the text will highlight.

  2. Type your changes in the field.

How do I change the question type of an existing question?

  1. Click on the question.

  2. Click on the drop-down menu in the Question area, in the mid-lower part of the Poll panel.  Choose one of the three types in the menu that appears just after the word "Type."

  3. Click the Change Type button.

How can I save a poll to my computer for later use?

  1. Open the Poll panel per the instructions above.

  2. Click on the "Save" button in the upper area of the Poll panel. The button is marked with a downward-pointing arrow.

  3. You will be presented with the typical "Save as..." window to choose where the file is saved. Consider the names you give these poll files if you intend to use many of them. It might help to name them in a chronological order with a class number or with conceptual names related to the content.

How can I load a previously saved poll and open it for attendees?

You can create a poll during a session and open it to attendees or you can open a poll you created previously and saved to your computer.

  1. Open the Poll panel per the instructions above.

  2. Click the 'Open' button in the upper area of the Poll panel.

  3. Locate and select your poll saved previously to your computer and open it.

  4. The poll should appear in the Poll panel, but won't be visible to attendees yet. When you want the poll to become available to the other attendees, click 'Open Poll' in the 'Polling' panel.

What will a student see when I open a poll?

  1. The poll will display in each attendees' Polling panel where they will have the opportunity to respond to your questions. Note that people who joined from a video device or video room will not be able to participate in polls.
  2. Attendees will need to click 'Submit' send their response in to the tally.

How can I see if a poll is being answered?

  1. While the poll is in progress, you can monitor how many people have responded, and when everyone is finished.

  2. The poll will close automatically when the timer countdown finishes (if you chose to use a timer). You can also close the poll manually by clicking the 'Close Poll' button in the lower right corner of the Poll panel.

How can I see each student's answers to a poll?

  1. If you'd like to see how each attendee responded to a poll, check the "Record individual responses" box in the Answer area of the Poll panel. Note that you will only see individual responses in the results text file you can save to your computer. You cannot see how each person responds to each question during the poll.

How can I see if everyone is finished with a poll?

  1. While the poll is open, you can see a percentage of attendees in the lower part of the poll panel who fall into these three categories: Not Started, In Progress, and Finished.

  2. If you'd like to see who is in each of the three above listed categories, click on the link labeled "Click to see detailed status." This will open a window that will show you who is in which category.

How can I share poll data with attendees during the session?

  1. Check the "Poll results" box under "Share with attendees." Note, there is an option to also share "individual results" with attendees, but consider if this will be a privacy violation before doing so.

  2. Click on the "Apply" button in the lower right corner of the Poll panel to share the aggregated poll results.

Can I create a timed poll?

Yes, you can create timed polls in meetings, events, and training sessions. In meetings and events, you can set the duration via the Options button in the lower right corner of the polling panel as shown in the image below. Note that your poll questions (or question sets) appear in small tabs at the top of the poll panel in events and trainings. Sets can have different time durations by choosing the set (by the tab), then clicking on the options button to change the time, and lastly clicking Save. Note that in meetings, slide sets will not appear together in tabs--they will only open one at a time in the Poll panel.

How to set a timer on a poll when using Webex meetings or events conference types.

The view in training is the same with some slight changes in the screen design as seen in the below image. Note that the .atp files, when opened in a training session, carried the different alarm times set when they were saved.

Can I save poll results, aggregate, and individual results?

Yes, you can save poll results either during the session or as you are ending the session as the host.  Caution - both are easy to forget.

  1. The first method for saving poll results to your computer is available while the session is still open:

    1. First, click on the "File" menu.

    2. Select "Save."

    3. Select "Poll Results."

    4. Use the computer's "Save as..." window to choose between "Text File group result" or "Text File individual attendees results."

  2. The first method for saving poll results to your computer is available as you (the host) end a session:

    1. When you choose to end the session, you will see a confirmation prompt, "Do you want to end this meeting / event / training for all participants?" and you will see an option to check off a box to "save the event files."

    2. Next, if you check off "Save event files" you will see additional check box options appear to save the "Poll questionnaires" and "All poll results" and the option to choose where these files will save to your computer.
