To complete this project safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards, JMU and its construction partners developed a schedule that includes a scheduled reopening date of Fall 2026.
Construction began in June 2023. This followed a successful move-out operation that allowed the safe transport of library books and equipment to new locations, the strategic redeployment of Carrier furniture elsewhere on campus, and the relocation of dozens of employees who had been based in Carrier.
During construction, you can still access four library locations: Rose Library, the Music Library, the Educational Technology & Media Center, and the new JMU Libraries Express. JMU is also identifying, enhancing, and promoting study spaces across campus, including with a new interactive study space map.
Major construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of December 2025. There are additional steps that must be coordinated by JMU Facilities Planning and Construction once the external construction manager, Kjellstrom + Lee, wraps up major construction.
We are collaborating with our partners in JMU Facilities Management on our plans to bring books back, install new technology, relocate staff offices, and finish the other labor needed to safely welcome you back. We are also developing procedures to operate, staff, and support all the new spaces. Our successful move-out operation prepared us well for the multi-phased project to move back into Carrier Library during Spring and Summer 2026.
All this work must safely conclude before we can welcome campus and the public into the new Carrier Library.
Following the move-in process, the building will be ready for you again! We anticipate a grand reopening of Carrier Library for Fall semester 2026.
